Out of the blue one afternoon, without taking his eyes off the monitor he was working at, Jeeb asked, âHave you ever heard of Bee Ees?â
Rachelle looked up. âYes, I have. What do you know about it?â
âAlmost nothing. The first time I heard of it was in college on Mars. There were rumors about some kind of a strange energy wave that had been secretly developed by the government.â
âWhat else?â
Jeeb shook his head. âEver since, I have repeatedly searched in the biggest databases at my disposal, but I could never find anythingâabsolutely nothing.â
Rachelle stood, smiling ambiguously, and said, âMaybe because you spelled it wrong. In fact itâs not two words but two letters, B and E, an acronym for âbrain emissions,ââ she said.
âOh,â Jeeb said, feeling foolish. âSo itâs that simple.â
âNot entirely; it describes the kind of energy wave that travels much faster than the speed of light and has some strange properties that penetrate anything we can imagine.â
Jeeb frowned. âAre you sure about the speed?â
âPositive,â Rachelle said smugly.
âSo, there was something after all,â Jeeb said. âHow is that you know so much about it?â
âBecause five years ago Constellation and I were involved in measuring its speed with maximum precision,â Rachelle said.
âAnd the result?â
âYou canât imagine how difficult it was to measure the speed of something that fast!â she said. âAfter remeasuring multiple times, we could only say that the speed of a BE is in the order of one million times the speed of light.â
Jeeb rose and came over to Rachelleâs station. âAre you sure about the numbers? Are you actually putting six zeros at the end of the speed of light?â
âYes,â she said. âItâs not exact, but the average of the many measurements we did was quite near that number.â
âHow did you measure it?
âTwo space lifts were involved. Our distance was around 100 AU or roughly 15 billion kilometers. The other ship sent a BE pulse precisely on the hour, every hour, and we registered the exact time that we received the pulse. It was never more than .05 seconds later.â
âWow,â Jeeb said. âSo what might something like that be used for?â
âIâve had five years to think about that,â Rachelle said. âFor one thing, it will let us talk to any place in the Solar System instantly and send videos of ongoing events in real time. Thatâs the scientific extrapolation. But in the human scale, itâs already been happening for thousands of years.â
Jeeb thought about that, drew a blank. âWhat do you mean?â
âYouâve heard stories about people with seemingly superhuman abilities, who could make others do things with just the power of thought, or could communicate telepathically, or move small objects simply by staring at them, and twins that felt each otherâs happiness or pain while they were thousands of kilometers apartâthings of that nature. They began scientific study of these phenomena at the end of the twentieth century, but their instruments were not good enough to register these kinds of waves.â
âWeâve been able to register electrical pulses in the brain for a long time,â Jeeb said.
